Autistic UK Statement regarding the Daily Mail article, “Are autistic people at risk of being radicalised?” (23 June 2017)

Autistic UK would like to make a statement about some of the comments made in the Daily Mail article, “Are autistic people at risk of being radicalised?” (23 June 2017)

Autistic UK is deeply concerned that the Daily Mail’s headline has had the effect of drawing a connection between Autism and terrorist actions. We believe that drawing this parallel is not only deceptive, but also has the potential to create a further stigma for Autistic Individuals.

We believe that the Daily Mail has framed the story in such a way as to create the false impression that Autistic Individuals are more predisposed to committing actions of a terrorist nature. There is no evidence to support this theory and Autistic UK believes that, in reporting this story in this sensationalist way, the Daily Mail is encouraging a stereotype of Autistic Individuals as isolated, lonely individuals who are incapable of empathy and do not feel human emotion. These stereotypes are damaging and incorrect, and we urge the Daily Mail to be more responsible on its reporting of Autism in the future.

ENDS.
